We have two one-day itineraries (this one and another one starting at the Colosseum), perfect for those visiting Rome from a cruise, stopping at the Port of Civitavecchia, with only a few hours available but wanting to experience the best that Rome has to offer. These itineraries are based on our experience (we did them in October 2014 and January 2016) and our knowledge of the city. They were designed entirely on foot.
There are various ways to reach Rome from the port, whether on your own by taxi or Uber, or by public train. Cruise companies sometimes offer excursions that solely provide transportation for passengers (whether by train or bus).
Taking into account these factors, please be mindful of:
- Return time (don’t be late, the ship won’t wait for you)
- Don’t go without a defined itinerary
- Pick-up location
- You can’t afford to wait in lines for too long, consider your available time.

1-day Itinerary – Start and End at the Vatican
During this visit to Rome, we began at the Vatican as we took the train (ticket purchased on the ship) that transported us from Civitavecchia to the Roma San-Pietro station. There is the “Civitavecchia Express,” a direct train for cruise passengers that connects the Port of Civitavecchia with Rome.

- Sant’Angelo Bridge
- Navona Square
- Pantheon
- Via del Corso
- Piazza del Popolo or Piazza di Spagna (Via Condotti)
- Trevi Fountain
- Venice Square
- Colosseum (we didn’t go this time, depends on available time)
- St. Peter’s Square (Vatican City)
- St. Peter’s Basilica (we entered this time, as we didn’t go to the Colosseum)
